In the late 1990s, Marilyn Williams, manager of the Edmond Senior Citizens Center, explored the possibility of reaching out to senior adults in the community beyond the Senior Center. At this time, the Senior Center was being generously supported by the City of Edmond.
Edmond Senior Center Background
The Senior Center provided many social activities for senior adults in Edmond. It also provided educational programs, art classes, exercise classes and a noon meal.
Eventually, there was the thought that senior adults in Edmond had needs that were not being met. After discussion with City officials, a focus group was formed that met over a 12-month period to decide how to proceed.
OKC Community Foundation Becomes Holding Foundation for the Edmond Senior Center Foundation
It was decided that the Edmond Senior Community Foundation, Inc. would be formed. Discussions with the OKC Community Foundation took place to see what a partnership with them would look like. It was decided the ESCF would have a volunteer Board and no paid staff.
The OKC Foundation became the holding Foundation for the funds and they distribute interest checks to the Board to be invested in the Edmond Community each year.
Edmond Senior Community Foundation Gains 501c3 Status
